Rell's Budget Plan

My first response to the front page of the News Times story this morning, "Rell Unveils Budget Plan", was "oh no they are going to take more money from our paychecks!"However, after reading the full story and seeing some other people's perspective I have to say I think the plan is fair and will absolutely benefit children all over the state. Governor Rell plans to increase education funding to all cities and towns over a 3 year period. The money to fund the increase will be taken from an increase in cigarette taxes (which I support 100%) and a state income tax increase. The income tax increase will spread the burden to everyone and in the end we will all benefit from a better educated youth. The article also mentioned the creation of a new Department of Energy, I just hope this new department also takes on the outrageous electricity price increases that have taken place over the last few years, and that help can be provided for the low income families that have to choose between paying the electric bill and putting food on the table.

Gov. Rell's budget proposals contain little in the way of substance on some very important issues the taxpaying citizen is now facing. Her stance on education makes me feel that she, like other officials in Hartford, think that all will be right with education in CT if we just continue to throw more money at it- WRONG!!. We need to cut to the chase and eliminate the root causes of education budgets run amok- exorbitant salaries and benefits for teachers and local education officials due to mis-guided and onesided union contract negotiations, and the additional financial burden to the cities and towns by being forced to educate undocumented illegal residents in our public schools, just to name a few. Our healthcare system is also being pushed to the limit, as we are again forced to shoulder the costs of healthcare for undocumented residents who have no insurance, but have come to the conclusion that it is their right to receive care at NO COST TO THEMSELVES. Why was this not mentioned in any detail by the governor? Why did she not have any ideas or suggestions to put forward on these important issues? The Charter Oak Plan, while it does offer the opportunity for those without insurance to get into a health plan, will still be unaffordable for many people over the long term.
Governor Rell's Energy Initiative offers little in the way of curbing the spiraling out of control costs associated with electricity and gasoline in this state- two commodities that the typical resident/consumer is heavily dependant upon.Initiatives or benefits in her outline are geared toward businesses, as residents/consumers again are shouldering not just the increase in the cost, but are also facing increases as businesses increase their charges to the consumer, in an effort to cover increases in their costs of doing business.
Yet, Governor Rell is still asking for an increase in the state income tax over the next two years. How much more can elected officials in Hartford expect residents to pay?.
