Congratulations to Mayor Boughton and all the candidates who won last night. Things have been a little crazy over the last two years but with Lynn Taborsak gone hopefully the Council and Mayor can all work together and continue making our city a place we want to live in.

GREAT Common Council meeting tonight, I'm glad the city is taking another step to deal with our illegal immigration problem, we can't wait for the federal government to try to figure something out!

I also have to say I strongly agree with many comments made regarding the cultural monuments being discussed for outside of City Hall. There is not enough room for all the monuments and some groups will inevitably be left out. Lets find a better place for these monuments or lets think of something better to commemorate the diversity of cultures we have in our community.

Misinformed opinions are a waste of our time!

Well its been over a month since our last post and we aren't going to act like we went on vaca again. To be honest we've been busy and there hasn't been much to add our opinions to, until now.

There is nothing I can't stand more then reading letters to the Editor of the News Times that clearly are full of incorrect assumptions and accusations.

Why not raise flags of other countries? This letter is complaining about a Brazilian flag now flying over the city along with an American flag. WRONG! If this person spent the time it took to write the letter to actually educate herself on what is really going on then she would realize that she is complaining about something that doesn't exist. I have been fortunate enough to be invited to several flag raising ceremonies by friends including the Indian, Lebanese and Portuguese ceremonies all of which were very nice and their flag only flew for the remainder of that day with the American flag.

Danbury is more than downtown This letter accused city officials of focusing their efforts to only our downtown. Either this guy lives in a bubble or he is playing stupid in order to get his letter in the paper to publicly bash the city for something it isn't doing. I have witnessed first hand how revitalization is happening throughout the city. My kids have enjoyed a new park all summer, that is not downtown, and the city's UNIT team has helped me more then once with my neighbors. The fact is if this guy asked for help he would get it and if he paid attention he would see a lot of good change in our city. Improvements and change take time, speak up and be a little more patient.

Wait....This is a City Right?

I read something in the paper last week that really got me going and then reading a letter to the editor today made me decide to write this post. First off, since when is it ok for the News Times to do a feel good story on someone growing a cornfield in their front yard in the middle of our downtown ?
(Aug. 14 -News Times- Letter to the Editor -"Danbury's witch hunt against Guinea fowl")
Second, how is this story getting positive comments? My only conclusion is that these people don't realize this cornfield is in a front yard, and that they have not driven by the darn thing regularly to see how out of place it is and how it devalues the homes around it.

So what set me off on a poor lady's front yard cornfield? Well the fact that people think they can do whatever they want with their property without any consideration for their neighbors and the people who have to drive by it on a daily basis. Examples include cars parked in front yards, people loitering infront of homes, laundry hung on bushes and fences and in this case a cornfield adjacent to a main road!

What else set me off? The fool who wrote a letter to the editor complaining about city officials forcing him to legalize his shed and get rid of his guinea fowl.

Are you kidding me? How can you bash city officials for doing their job? How can you expect the Zoning Board of Appeals to say its ok for you to have chickens running around on your property and its ok for you to have built an entire structure on your property without following the proper procedures? How can you say this was a waste of time and tax dollars? I know I don't want chickens or goats or horses and cows running around next door to me and I know that they belong on a farm. I also know that if the city let one person do it then everyone would want to do what they want and if they did then we'd have cornfields and chicken coops popping up all over our CITY...I emphasize the word city because that is what we are and chickens and corn don't belong in a city's downtown! Come on people, learn to assimilate and respect your neighbors!

Our Condolences

Local politics have started back up in the last couple of weeks but its really too early to guess on winners and I honestly haven't heard or read anything revolutionary. Helena is still talking in circles about nothing, bringing up issues that aren't even issues and not providing any solutions to what she says is wrong, and the Mayor is going about his job with major groundbreakings and improvements in recent weeks, by the way a new elementary school and police headquarters are a major step forward, great job Mayor Boughton and City Hall!

On another note, the reason I am posting is to openly express our deepest condolences, on behalf of everyone at Listen Up Danbury!, to all those affected by the bridge collapse in Minneapolis. I was watching news coverage of the disaster and came across the story of a young boy who helped save a bus full of children on the bridge (the details are in the link below). I hope in addition to this young man getting the recognition that he deserves that he also receives help from those who can afford it with his future. Celebrities give away money all the time for different causes and there is something about this boy that makes him seem deserving of a bright future, especially now that he is a hero.

Doing What They Can

After reading the front page story this morning in the News Times I became concerned with the well being of Rayany Santos who is only 17 and has lost her family which is being deported back to Brazil. My first thought was that this is a federal issue and the Mayor can't do anything to help this family, but I was sure his office could help the poor girl who was left behind. I felt horrible for the girl and wanted to help so I called Mayor Boughton. Once I spoke to someone about the issue I felt much better. I was told that the girl does have family living in the area and that she would be staying with them, I was also told that many others had called also wanting to help and that Mayor Boughton had spoken with the girl personally and that he had contacted Congressman Chris Murphy's office to help her and her family. This is a sad story and there are extreme opinions found in the News Times comments and on other blogs but in the end this family did not leave when their visas' expired and they knew that if they stayed and applied for citizenship that their could be a chance that they would not be allowed to stay. Are they to blame for the outcome of this sad story? In a way yes. Is the federal immigration system a complete mess, sending back first those that are actually trying to be good citizens? Yes. Can anything be done at a local level? No, but I do want to thank all the individuals who showed sympathy for this family because the last thing they need right now is to feel persecuted and I do want to thank Mayor Boughton and his staff for doing what they could to help. Our Mayor gets a lot of slack for being anti-illegal and not doing enough, but he is doing what he can and I commend him for it. Good luck Santos family.

Most of the time I am for raises to school budgets and funding, but a recent approval by the Danbury Board of Education to provide additional increases to administrative pay wages is both shocking and enraging. The Superintendent's reason for the pay increases is to, keep staff from leaving the Danbury education system for other school systems, are you kidding me?!! If they want a more money then please do leave! If any staff of the education system deserves a raise its the men and women who are in the classroom teaching our kids day in and day out. Secretaries and administrative assistants can easily be replaced and should be replaced when they become greedy. In addition, if the Superintendent is so concerned then he should give up his 3.8% increase to give to others in his offices. Further more, shouldn't the City have a say in this matter? The city sets the yearly budget and if they want more money then they should request it for the next budget. Speaking of, I'd like to know where the money for these pay increases is coming from? Shouldn't the money be used for more important things, like healthier school lunches or more teachers? Shame on you Board of Education and Superintendent Pascarella!

Vacations Over : (

Well folks the Dbyblogger team is back in action. Unfortunately all vacations fly by so quickly; back to reality. It seems as though a lot has gone on in the past few weeks but we are geared up to tackle all we've missed. My family and I enjoyed the Royal Caribbean cruise line as we traveled aboard the Legend of the Seas ship. It was a relaxing time to say the least... however it's great to be back home and best of all, camp for the kids starts on Monday!

Here's a brief over view of all we will bring to our readers in the next few weeks. Our readers have been accumulating greatly over the past 7 months. We thank them for awesome input and urge you to keep coming back for more.

Money for the less fortunate?

No money for the less fortunate, isn't that the way it always is?
.... We posted on the issue of disaster recovery funding for the less fortunate and we are glad to see that Governor Rell's petition was heard and that FEMA is still trying to get aid for the individuals in our city who suffered from the April storm and flooding. We hope that they will get some help to rebuild their homes and businesses.

If you had damage due to the storm make sure you call FEMA at 1-800-621-3362 to apply or you can visit their temporary office at Danbury City Hall on the 2nd Fl. from 8am to 6pm Monday through Saturday.

Innocent Until Proven Guilty

We decided not to post on this issue right away since we didn't want to jump to any conclusions, however, the more we hear about the incident at Danbury Fair Mall the stronger we feel about our first opinion on the story.

Danbury Police were recently accused at a public meeting and in the papers of using excessive force on a group of youths who they had to break up late at night in the Danbury Fair Mall parking lot. Parents and the local NAACP are in an uproar over the issue but surveillance video released by Mall security shows the majority of the incident and everyone agrees there was no excessive force. In addition, video footage from the booking area of the Police Dept. show a youth using a racial slur at a Police Officer. How reliable can a groups of kids be if they are hanging out in a parking lot at midnight waiting for a fight and using racial slurs at Police Officers? Haven't these people seen an episode of COPS? When Officers enter a situation where there is a crowd, where there could be weapons and where they are faced with resistance then they might have to be rougher to gain control of the situation.

Formal complaints have also not been filed by the youths, according to The News Times, because their lawyer told them it would incriminate them, but they were in the wrong place doing the wrong things and they should suffer the consequences, and if their allegations are true then they should file despite the consequences to keep the Police Officers from doing the same thing again.

Instead of these parents and community leaders shouting "Abuse" at the Police Department, they should be shouting at the kids for choosing to be in a parking lot, waiting for a fight at midnight.

Parade Ordinance Crosses FINISH LINE!

With an 11-8 vote, Danbury's Common Council had finally passed its' parade ordinance at the June meeting.
Those who did not vote, approving the ordinance were all 6 Dems and 2 Republicans, Mary Saracino and Jane Diggs. That number of Republican 'No' votes may have been greater if 6th ward councilman Ben Chianese didn't make the motion to send Phil Curran's appointment to the council to an Ad Hoc. My knowledge, Phil Curran will be fulfilling the seat of Councilman Ted Cutsumpas who has since resigned. (It was very clear to me that Chianese didn't even understand the result of his motion following the end of the meeting.) The Dems dug themselves into a very deep hole this time.

Mayor Boughton allowed time in the beginning of the meeting for the public to speak, now he is being criticized by a certain blogger that he only chose those in favor of the ordinance, those who would applaud him for doing what he's doing. Hello...then why did he let Mr. DaSilva speak, and as my own witness if Helena Abrantes wanted to speak she would have been seated up front where most all the other speakers were positioned to be called upon.

The public speakers on both ends of the spectrum brought up valid points pertaining to the ordinance. Elise Marciano, founder of the US Citizens for Immigration Law Enforcement based her praise for this ordinance on the inconvenience of others during the last soccer parade. Also speaking was John Woodruff who claimed the ordinance was based on prejudice and racism. Does Mr Woodruff not see the diverse culture of churches, restaurants, and convenience stores on Main Street? How can one possibly say the city of Danbury is basing an ordinance on prejudice and racism?

We've all heard Mayor Mark Boughton say many times in the past that Danbury is a welcoming society, a lawful one as well. Keep up the work Mr. Mayor and council members!

What An Embarassment!

Yesterday, the State Senate voted to give children of illegal immigrants the right to pay in state college tuition prices. They passed this by a 20-15 vote. The bill now goes to Governor Rell, who has said that she is not sure whether she will sign it or not. "

How this bill got so far is beyond any of our understanding. Our State Senators are obviously not listening to the people who elected them if they think we want criminals (aka illegal immigrants) to have the same benfits as our children who were born in this country and have paid their taxes to earn the right to receive instate tuition. How about passing a bill forbidding anyone who is not a legal resident of this country from studying at our universities?!! Governor Rell , we say NO to instate tuition for illegals....we will remember the next time you ask us to vote for you.

Veterans, We Honor You!

Looking back at this weekend I have to say that I am proud of the way our great city honors our nation's veterans. Saturday morning brought together residents and visitors to honor the city's newest memorial dedicated to African American Civil War soldiers and sailors from the greater Danbury area. Monday morning many of us lined Main Street to watch this year's parade which hopefully reminded us about those who have fought for our freedom, while down the street from me veterans marched early in the morning to a memorial to lay a wreath in honor of soldiers who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country. I want to thank local officials, veterans groups and individuals who took some time this weekend away from the TV, pool and bbq to remember the real meaning of Memorial Day.

The News Times had an editorial today regarding the new Elmer's diner on North Street and we have to agree with their point. What are city officials thinking by approving businesses in areas where there isn't enough parking and way too much traffic? Even worse, now parking is being allowed along such a busy street where traffic congestion is horrible during rush hour! Elmer's Diner isn't the only mind boggling new construction in town, the new Walgreens in the Stew Leonard's parking lot makes no sense as well. The city didn't allow Stew Leonard's to expand their store which is an asset to the city but they let yet another Walgreens be built in an area where parking has been an issue for years! I think this November we need to take a closer look at who we are electing to our Planning and Zoning Commission and demand that the Planning and Zoning Department start thinking about what is best for the city and not developers.

So President Bush declared a Major Disaster in Connecticut on May 11th confirming aid for those who probably need it the least.

Governor Rell's press release explained who would get the aid as follows:
"local governments and certain non-profit agencies in Fairfield and Litchfield counties will be eligible for reimbursement of part of the costs they incurred to cope with the storm and its aftermath. In addition all counties in the state are eligible for grants under the Hazard Mitigation program, which pays for actions to prevent or reduce long-term risks to life and property from natural hazards."

Don't get me wrong businesses and municipalities do need the help to fix up streets, bridges, facilities, etc. that were damaged by the flood but they have special insurance that they can afford while individuals need the aid too. I am glad to see that Governor Rell isn't letting this issue go as she has requested and begun the process of appealing for more assistance from the federal government for individuals.

Governor Rell's press release stated:
“I very much appreciate the assistance this declaration will provide for the people of Connecticut"....“I am asking the state Department of Emergency Management and Homeland Security to prepare to appeal this portion of the decision,” Governor Rell said. “Inspectors from the Federal Emergency Management Agency counted more than $31 million in private losses from the storm. In fact, private losses made up the vast majority of the more than $43 million FEMA estimated the storm had cost Connecticut. What these homeowners need right now is assistance in putting things right again in their own homes.”

Good job Governor Rell for not forgetting about the less fortunate, a large percentage of which live in Danbury.

Can You Believe It's Been 3 Months?

Dbyblogger would like to update on the past few months in which this blog was inactive. There were a few major events that happened here in the city and we would like to make a few comments. Dbyblogger is sorry for the lack of posts but other local bloggers have certainly kept readers up to date with their opinions....so here is ours'!

Clean City Danbury Day 2007....News Times reported on the huge success of Clean City Danbury Day. I myself waited in line for about 30 minutes at the PAL Building, others said they waited close to 2 hours. Next year I hope the Mayor and Clean City organizers provide the numerous sites with more dumpsters and possibly more drop off sites....(Triple A Building on Lake Avenue or Danbury High School on Clapboard Ridge.) Now let's all step up to the plate and keep this city clean. Overall Great Job Danbury Residents!
Parade Ordinance.....I'm sure a lot of you were hoping we would comment on the parade ordinance that took effect for a mere twelve hours. The Common Council will vote on it the beginning of next month. I am rooting that this ordinance does take effect and a majority of the members of the council vote yes. It's no surprise that a few Dems are struggling to agree with the remainder of the council.....Where were they when Brazil won a game in the World Cup this past summer? And Where were they when Danbury residents were complaining about the traffic problems?
ICE........The Immigrations Custom Enforcement was at it again this past week. Now the Danbury 10 are undergoing criminal investigations and most likely will be represented by the Yale School of Law.....hmmmm the Yale School of Law represented the Danbury 11....they had a brief conference following the raid but....what has happened since then?
HAT CITY BLOGGER.........totally out of control! Too bad everyday wasn't officially Mother's Day because according to HAT CITY he wouldn't be blogging on Mother's Day; in an attempt to spend time with the family. (hahahahaha) But in all honesty this blogger is out of control. His lastest post with the disturbing photo of Oedipus Tyrannus, captioning that the mayor should take a lesson from him before poking his own eyes out. He is again upset with the parade ordinance yet feels that the more he blogs, the more he bashes, his point will be the result. (I heard it on Main Street......Hat City is promoting his blog with flyers being posted on car windshields.....)

If I Didn't Like It, You'd Know About It

Sorry this one is a little late but I wanted to make sure we commented on this. The News Times had an editorial in Thursday's paper regarding the lack of taxpayer comments at recent budget meetings. Basically what I got out of the editorial was that people no longer attend or speak up at council and various city meetings because they have a lack of confidence that they can make a difference or that they feel they are not welcomed. The Editor completely discounted the belief that if people don't attend meetings then they are supportive of what is being done. Well not so fast to you News Times Editor, are we living in the same city and attending the same meetings and reading the same editorials in your paper? If people in Danbury have a problem with the way things are being handled and what is being done, believe me they DO NOT wait for an invitation to speak their minds. They shout from the roof tops and they complain to everyone who will listen.
Don't get me wrong, I applaud the 4 people who the editor praised for speaking their minds, but these are the same four people to speak up about everything at almost every public meeting. Now if Mrs. Smith who never comes around unless something is really wrong comes to a public meeting, then that is a big thing.
The fact is I'd be more concerned if people were showing up and complaining. If something is wrong people do speak up and if meetings go unattended, it is a shame, but it doesn't mean that they don't feel like their opinions don't count or that they don't feel welcomed.
People will never be happy, if there is a meeting at 5:30pm people will complain that residents are still at work, if meetings are held at 7pm people will complain that people are having dinner with their families. The point is it doesn't matter what time these meetings are, if people don't support an issue or in this case the budget, they would be there or they would be letting everyone know how they feel.

To Post or Not to Post.....

So some of our commenters, or one of you, have complained about us posting only once or twice a week, and we appreciate your input, but I know I'd rather read a blog were the blogger writes about something they actually care about or that is really important instead of just writing about anything just to get a post up for the day. So, for now unless we receive an overwhelming response from our readers that they want us to post daily crap, we will continue to only blog when we feel we really have something to say. I also want to take this opportunity to thank our loyal readers for visiting the site regularly and for taking the time to leave mature, respectful and intelligent comments.

Yes, or No, For Maria - Cinta Lowe?

The Latino community is one of the fastest growing population in the state and the largest minority group in this area; over 20,000.

The mission of the Hispanic Center, located on 87 West Street in Danbury is:

Encourage Hispanic members to self sufficiency, personal responsibility, career development and entrepreneurial success.
Wants members of Hispanic community to be leaders to the community at large

The Hispanic Center also teaches skills in computers, preparation for GED courses, mathematics, and English. The executive director of the Hispanic Center of Greater Danbury is, Maria-Cinta Lowe. Many of us saw Lowe photographed in the recent article published by the News Times regarding the ICE Raids. Some claim Lowe's actions with the ICE Raids and immigration forums are taking away the main focus of the Hispanic Center.

The Hispanic Center claimed they were low funded at the past common council meeting. The common council meeting was a budget hearing focusing on non profits. The Hispanic Center made a statement pertaining to the idea that they are returning to their main mission of the center and will not get caught up with the immigration, illegal or legal that is going on here in Danbury........is that why they should be receiving more money out of the budget?

What about other non profits such as the Red Cross, WeCAHR, AmeriCares and the Amos House?

It's questionable to wonder WHY Maria-Cinta Lowe is dedicating much of her time and attention these days to the ICE Raids?? We understand their mission, which has been established since 1967 and we commend them for their hard work in the community. They have a dedicated staff that keeps the center up and running but they also have an executive director that is supporting illegal immigration. And at the same time the executive director, Maria-Cinta Lowe is requesting the city of Danbury to give her money for her non profit organization. The City of Danbury is trying very hard to preserve the community we live in. Danbury is a welcoming community but also a community that enforces laws in which we all have the equal opportunity to live here, be safe, comfortable, hold a job, raise a family, and be successful. Those who break the laws should NOT be granted the entities listed above as those who obey the laws. Danbury hasn't taken away it's welcome mat, but it has positioned it to a place where truthful, US citizens can pass over it.

Therefore if Maria-Cinta Lowe continues her support of illegal immigration she should be removed from the Hispanic Center. Let us know what you think.

Adding to the Mayor's Budget

We all know how upset the Democrats were to find out that Danbury's Mayor Mark Boughton had decided to present his budget a month earlier as Finance Director, Dena Diorio was leaving for a new job position. (March vs. April)

Apparently it caused a great stir as the Mayor proceeded with his budget address to the common council on March 6th, 2007.

On the show, "Ideas at Work and Beyond," with host Ivon Alcime and guest Helena Abrantes (possible democratic challenger for Mayor's position) Abrantes claimed the Mayor's "early" proposal was too soon.
Abrantes claimed that the Mayor who proposed a local budget incorporating a raise in the state income tax can't happen until the legislatures vote on it. Abrantes also referred to this proposal as a, "smoky mirror."
Lastly Abrantes said the city of Danbury can not count on $ that doesn't exist. If we do, the taxpayers are going to get hurt.
At a March 2007, DTC meeting, State Representative Bob Godfrey [D] called the Mayor's early budget, "folly." Godfrey also noted that State Senator David Cappiello [R] called the Mayor's address, "irresponsible."
Godfrey said, there is no rush to adopt a city budget, "Don't be in a Hurry to Hurry."
Godfrey also said we have to plan a budget using, 'real, not magic,' numbers. When the money comes in on April 15th, (1st Quarter Sales Tax) that is when any type of city budget should be proposed.
Lastly on April 20th, the legislatures will vote on the Governor's Budget.
Common Councilman Thomas Saadi stated, "This budget relies on the governor's funds. While that reliance may be 80 or 90 percent right, we are going to have to make up the difference."

Now let's take a glance at the reasoning of others'.

Q. What is the job of the Director of Finance?
A. "The Department of Finance is responsible for all financial matters of the City of Danbury, which range from collecting taxes to auditing expenditures. Accounts are kept by the Department of Finance showing the financial transaction for all departments and agencies of the City, ensuring that no taxpayer’s dollar goes astray. Additionally, the Department of Finance submits financial reports to the Common Council on a monthly basis so the state of the City may be determined. The Director of Finance has direct supervision over the Departments of Finance. " (Sounds like the Finance Director does have a tad bit to do with the budget, I'm sure she was pleased all her hard work was recognized before she left a job she's been with for over 2 years.)
The Board of Education was surely anticipating this budget which pleased the members. Danbury School Board Chairman, Susan Podhajski said, "Mayor Boughton has been generous since he's been in office," she said, adding it doesn't get cheaper to staff the schools or to heat and maintain the district's 18 school buildings.
However, the Board of Education knows the budget isn't final, "Looking at increases across the state, I think we can do the job very well with that rate,'' Danbury Superintendent Salvatore Pascarella said about the mayor's proposal, which still needs Common Council approval.
Danbury's Mayor Boughton stated, "I'm thrilled with the governor's proposal and I'm supporting her 100 percent,'' Boughton said Tuesday. "If the legislature decides to cut the education cost-sharing funds, we'll have to revisit where we are."

If you haven't heard, Danbury is working on a 10 year plan to end homelessness. This was a topic on the agenda at the Common Council meeting, Monday night in New Milford. New Milford's guest...Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton.

"We want to change the dynamic so that rather than just manage the problem, we end it," Boughton said.

"I think this is a great initiative," council member Ray O'Brien said.

What Boughton Wants:

Homeless will get permanent housing, home ownership
Homeless will receive aid from social services to keep them off the streets
Homeless will obtain federal housing vouchers that allow them to move from the streets into their own homes. Vouchers are used to pay mortgages rather than apartment rent.
Seek regional partners. Sherman has agreed at a cost of $1,300.

What a NON-Show

Ok bare with us on this one, I know its long but we just had too much to say! Also, I know we'll be bashed for being a pro-republican blog again for this but we have to post things as we see them.

Last nights show on Comcast did just a little more to confirm my original opinions of the democrat’s possible candidate for Mayor. Helena Abrantes discussed all the great work she did for Eriquez during his administration and how she loves to help the community and how she wants to return Danbury to what it once was. Overall like I said before, I think Helena really cares about our community but she has none of the qualities needed to be Mayor.

Her biggest issue seemed to be the BRT tax incentives, she said that this is the first time in the history of Danbury that such tax incentives were given to a developer to build housing, even though that may be true, she should also take into account that this is the first time in Danbury’s history that our Downtown has lost so much business and become a place where most Danburians choose not to spend their time, so a first time tax break to a project that promises to bring more people downtown really isn’t such a horrible idea.

Helena also discussed how she’d like to change things by helping seniors to pay their bills and have food on the table, news flash, unless the democrats oppose it a tax credit is already being increased for our city’s seniors in the new budget.

Helena also expressed the importance of adding more police officers and safety personnel; check! That’s already been crossed off the list with plans discussed in the last 2 budgets, plus we are giving them a new fire house and police station, talk about a moral booster. Then she said if she was Mayor she’d give the police all the benefits they wanted, reality check, you can’t give everyone everything they want, if you do that the city goes into debt. Then Ivon came up with the brilliant view point that if you cut money in one area then you should do it for everything, another reality check, if you take money away, people get mad and the quality of service and programs go down.

Then she responds to a caller asking her if checks the legal status of her renters by saying, that isn’t mandatory, so basically she is going with the philosophy of look the other way or what you don’t know won’t hurt you. What kind of a Mayor would that make!?

Finally she complained about overdevelopment, then 10 minutes later she said we should use any available land to build more schools, which is it? Conserve our current open space or develop it?

Overall the show showed a candidate that needs to read from a piece of paper every time she wants to say something, like she did at the common council meeting on Tuesday night, and that she really has no specific points or plans. Also, has Ivon’s show got a new co-host? Why has Lynn Taborsak been on almost every week? It also seems to me that Ivon is getting alittle brainwashed, he showed his support for Helena in every way except to actually come out and say she can count on his vote. How about alittle more bipartisanship? And when a guest says that a Mayoral candidate shouldn't be reading from a piece of paper when she is saying what she stands for, don’t cut him off and say she really can be Mayor. That isn’t Mayor quality if you ask me.

U.N.I.T. is Proactive

Many of us saw the destruction of a deadly fire in the Bronx yesterday on local news channels and learned eight children and one adult had died has a result of careless behavior in a multi-family home.

Multi-family homes...sounds familiar because we've heard a lot about them here in Danbury lately.

And that is why the U.N.I.T. (Unified Neighborhood Inspection Team) is taking a proactive approach insuring the problem in the Bronx won't be a problem here in Danbury.

"The Unified Neighborhood Inspection Team will provide outreach programs to educate new residents of Danbury about our community standards and zoning rules and regulations. Our team will focus on blight remediation, code compliance and quality of life issues in Danbury’s neighborhoods and strive to enhance Danbury’s position as a premier place to live, work, and raise a family in a traditional yet progressive community. So far the U.N.I.T. "has conducted over 680 inspections in this past year; 40% were in violation of city codes relating to illegal apartments and construction without permits."

In today's News Times article featuring the UNIT, Danbury Fire Marshal, Barry Rickert stated, "Considering the size of our community and its demographics, I think we're doing a pretty good job."

Lets Make The World A Better Place?

The DanburyDan beat me to posting on this story but I figured I'd mention it too. The Tribuna, a local bilingual paper, did a front page story on Helena Abrantes candidacy for the 2007 Mayoral election that shed some insight into who she is and why she is running. The Headline was "I Am An Immigrant", well that is great but what does that have to do with being a good candidate for Mayor? I think it is great that the paper pointed out Helena will be the first female, Portuguese born, naturalized citizen to run for Mayor in Danbury, I think more immigrants should be involved with their government, but I just didn't see anything that would convince me she should be the first to be elected. She says in the article that Danbury is not the same, that is true, but in someways I think it has changed for the better and even when it comes to the negatives she failed to mention any specifics. She also said she thinks she'd be an asset because she speaks Spanish and Portuguese, well that is great but I interpret that as, I will cater to the immigrants, including the illegal immigrants. She said that Danbury is a melting pot, and yes it is but I know plenty of people who think it's becoming too much of one. She said that she could help people by explaining to them in their own language what all the laws and regulations mean, isn't the current Mayor already doing that by enforcing the laws, by participating in bilingual community forums and by bringing in leaders of the Spanish & Portuguese/Brazilian community to help when things get lost in interpretation? She said over development is causing a serious risk to the community, and yet she is pictured in the piece with former Mayor Gene Eriquez who allowed so much of the over development that is occurring today. She says that schools and education are the most important items on her agenda, well if you ask me the current Mayor has that pretty well covered with increases every year he's been in office to education funding, with the first major school renovations and construction in years, and a new magnet school that parents can't wait to get their kids into. She says that immigrants shouldn't lose their own culture, and I agree to a certain extent but I also think that is part of the problem with downtown. The immigrant based businesses should be welcoming all residents, not just catering to the Spanish or Portuguese speaking. Overall, Helena sounds like she really cares about Danbury, but she offers no solutions to problems or drastic changes to what she vaguely claims is wrong. I guess we'll wait and see but right now I think experience and a realistic vision are more important then a Lets Make the World A Better Place candidate.

March 6 Common Council Meeting- Part 2

Now onto to the budget. Overall the budget addressed some issues that Danbury has been struggling with for a long time. The budget plans to add more police officers, to increase their training and technology and to assist the department with its reorganization plan that will eventually save tax dollars and resources. A groundbreaking for the new Police Headquarters was also announced for this summer. The budget also includes 10 new firefighter positions for the new westside firehouse and a new fire truck, the construction is expected to be complete this summer as well. I thought this was GREAT news for Danbury's westside and the entire fire department which won't have to take so long to get to the westside for a fire and to save lives'. Our ambulance services will also improve with funding for a new call system.

The budget also includes a reorganization of the Public Works Department, which like the Police Department's plan is expected to save us some money. The UNIT team is getting more money as well, hopefully that will enable them to do more inspections and get more illegal out-of-state cars out of our neighborhoods. The budget also addressed rising energy cost. Unfortuanetly we don't all benefit from this new tax credit but it does help our seniors who live on fixed incomes and who struggle to pay their bills and to have enough for everyday necessities like buying groceries. Another good point was a no rate increase for sewer and water and a less then 1% increase in taxes. Any increase doesn't help us everyday working folks but less then 1% is not too bad considering all the money the city is putting into safety, our neighborhood preservation and our education which also received an increase in funding. Overall there were no major surprises but that is a good thing as long as we don't get any negative surprises.

Soon after the budget I had to get going but I heard the issue of the BRT and tax incentives brought some additional heated debate and infuriated Councilwoman Taborsak so much that she up and left the meeting in the middle of it. I don't know about you but if she was representing my district I'd be alittle upset, she didn't vote on the rest of the issues and she walked away from her duties as a council member. I don't care how upset you get with an issue if you are my representative I want you there to do what is best for me and my neighborhood. Let us know what your opinion of the council meeting was and of the key issues we discussed.

March 6 Common Council Meeting - Part1

So the City of Danbury's Common Council meeting was rather interesting last night. From the residents who spoke up at the beginning of the meeting, to the budget presentation, to the outburst of Councilwoman Taborsak, it was one that you shouldn't have missed. Since there is so much to talk about, and I don't know about you but I hate reading a long blog entry, I am going to discuss the budget in more then one post.

The meeting opened with the usual time for residents to address issues on the agenda and the biggest one was without a doubt the BRT apartments and the city's tax incentives for the company. Both sides brought up some good points, some argued that the apartments were never supposed to be for college students and that college students wouldn't bring the income to downtown that everyone was told residents of the new apartments would do. I can see that point, looking back at my college days I was pretty much broke all the time but I always managed to get enough for dinner out or to enjoy a night at a local bar both of which are within walking distance of the new apartments. Others complained that parking would be an issue but Westconn is already planning on adding shuttle service to and from the apartments to both its campuses and parking garages. Others complained about partying and the effect of college students taking little care of maintaining the apartments, but again Westconn has addressed that issue by planning to run the apartments as they do dorms with RAs to make sure things don't get crazy and I'm sure apartment inspections will take place at the end of the school year forcing those who didn't mainatin their apartments to pay for any damages.

I agree that the apartments and incentives weren't approved based on the fact that they would eventually become like Westconn dormitories and I would even question if the city should give BRT all the incentives it promised and maybe even have Westconn contribute alittle but in the end the apartments will bring people downtown, whether they be familes or students, and would developers really consider building in downtown if there weren't incentives? Westconn is an asset to our city and I think we should give the plan a chance and maybe next time the city can take better care of putting the details in their contracts.

Crosby Street Apartments Progressing

Common Council members this evening will discuss the apartment complex BRT is building on Crosby Street here in Danbury. The building contains 115 units and will rent out every single unit to students and students only at WCSU. The large brick building on Crosby Street a.k.a. Brookview Commons has studio, one bedroom and two bedroom apartments that come already furnished (sounds like a great deal.)

BRT will likely keep the tax incentive it received from the city in 2005 to build downtown housing.

The prices are not listed on the Brookview Commons website however it is to our knowledge here at dbyblogger that they range from $4,500.00 to about $7,500.00. The prices range as one individual will pay a smaller amount for a studio than one who chooses a 2 bedroom apartment.

However, what dbyblogger didn't find out about these apartments in the News Times or listed on the Brookview Commons page we would like to share with those out there who may be interested in this complex.

Students will be able to begin renting from Brookview Commons in the Fall of 2007.
Students will be able to live in this complex from the fall semester until the end of the spring semester.

If you choose to live in this complex during the summer time you will have to pay an extra amount.
BRT isn't sure if they will allow students to live there during the winter recess.

The set up will be similar to that of a dorm (R-A living on each floor)

There is no meal plan one will have to buy as there is for the underclassman who dorms on the campus of WCSU.

There will be a choice as to what parking garage a student chooses to have.

Regular uncovered garage is $30 a month (x tra, not included in rent)
Covered garage is $45 a month (x tra, not included in rent)

How Far Will The Govt. Go?

On February 27, 2007 an article was published in the News Times featuring a story entitled, "State weighs ban on trans fat." By clicking here you can read the full article from the News Times. In short a bill was proposed last month in which trans fat will be banned from restaurant use. This was the goal of state senator, John McKinney (R-Fairfield) and state senator, Andrew Roraback (R-Goshen). This, trans fat, according to the news times article is to blame for some 170-500 death in the state each year.

Connecticut would be the first state to ban such a substance from the use in restaurants.

Local state senator, David Cappiello is in agreement that Trans Fat is harmful but doesn't know if the government should be interfering.

"If we go down this road, what's to stop us from banning other products that we consume, such as alcohol or cigarettes?" he said.

Today in an article featured in the Conn. Post, "Lawmakers consider raising smoking to 21," an idea that has caused much discussion as of late in Hartford. Click here to read the full article.

It seems to us at dbyblogger that some issues Governor M. Jodi Rell addressed in her CT budget plan a few months ago have succeeded in causing further discussion. As she proposed to raise the state income tax she also had other ideas in mind as to how to do this. There will be an increase on the cigarette tax.

Is the government interfering too much?.....How far can the government go in stopping the goods of consumers; in as much as their goal is for the protection and well being of citizens?

VIP Common Council Meeting Tomorrow (March 6, 2007)

Tomorrow night, March 6th, is once again the first Tuesday of the month which means....Common Council Meets. However tomorrow night Mayor Mark Boughton will present his spending plan for the 2007-2008 fiscal year. A previous post on this blog noted the Mayor and Director of Finance, Dena Diorio will present this budget plan a month earlier as a result of Diorio's new job position in North Carolina. She deserves to deliver this presentation with the Mayor as many many hours were put into this spending plan. What a surprise...the democrats are upset once again. I am sure if one of the democrats on the council was in Diorio's position he/she would also like to present a major accomplishment for a city he/she has worked so hard for. It is to our belief here at DBYBLOGGER that this will be the last common council meeting in which Diorio will attend. Please join us tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m., 3rd Floor, common council chambers to thumb up, thumb down the spending plan for the city of Danbury as well as wish Diorio much success in her future and gratitude for all her hard work as Director of Finance.

Today I was in a local diner and heard talk about the new diner, Elmer's, on North Street. It isn't open yet but should be soon.

November 2007 Election (260 Days Away)

Yes...it's coming again...our city officials are up for election November 2007. Mayor Mark Boughton of course he is going to run again. But the question is what Democrat will be his challenger? Recent rumors of Councilman Saadi and Councilwoman Taborsak have since stepped down from running for the position of Mayor. Who the heck do the democrats have left??

No...If you're pushing for Dean Esposito again just drive around the streets of Danbury and you will see him cruising in a city car...that's right he is a city employee now - no need to run again!

Possibly...In today's Danbury News Times former city clerk, Helena Abrantes may take action and run against Boughton. She is currently the owner of, "The Atlantic," a fine portuguese restaurant here in Danbury and is active in the Danbury Democratic Town Committee. But will that be enough for her to make herself known?

Abrantes will further this statement about running for the mayor's position this Thursday at the Catholic War Veterans.

Moving Back & Moving on.... For 2 City Employees

1. This morning we read that Danbury's Fire Marshall, Barry Rickert, has said no to the job in Southbury and will remain active here in Danbury. Rickert has been with the city of Danbury's fire department for over 34 years and he has chosen to keep on going even though some retire at this stage of the game.

Danbury's Mayor Mark Boughton quoted in today's newstimes, "Barry does a great job," said Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton. "The citizens are well served. He's a professional and wherever he serves, he'll be a professional."

2. Today it has been made clear and official that Danbury's Finance Director, Dena Diorio will be leaving to take a similar job in North Carolina. Dena was a great asset to the city of Danbury since taking the postion in August 2002. Mayor Mark Boughton has said he will step up the time frame of dispursing the city's budget by a month so Dena, "can oversee the process one last time."

A New TASTE OF DANBURY

After 30 years, Tortilla Flats has closed. Their offering of tasty Mexican food has been replaced by a ,'neo-asian' restaurant. I am looking forward to this new place. Kabuki, & Ichiro and the others are great and I think if the owner keeps his prices moderately low his business will be successful. I believe this new restaurant won't open until April or May so if you are craving a taste of this food check out Wild Ginger in Ridgefield. It's right off the main street in the CVS shopping plaza...you won't leave hungry!

Who Should Be Heard?

Illegal immigration is always a tough and sensitive issue and most of the time you can't argue for illegal immigration because they are breaking the laws of our nation. However, every once-in- awhile you hear of the personal struggle of an illegal immigrant who is truly just trying to make a better life for themselves and their family and you can't help but wish we had enough room and resources for everyone who want to come to our country. One such story is that of Tereza Pereira of Danbury who's struggle to return to her family after being picked up by ICE last week has continued to make front page news in the News Times. Today's article offered some hope that our justice system isn't completely cold hearted, click here to read the story, Tereza was allowed to return home while her case has been reopened and until she has her hearing. Its hard to say if Tereza should be allowed to stay in the U.S. since she did come here illegally in the first place but it is safe to say she did try to become a legal citizen awhile back and seems to have been taken advantage of by the lawyers she asked to help her apply for citizenship. However it turns out, it seems fair that Tereza have a fair hearing for citizenship and she should be allowed to be at home for her family and children while she awaits that hearing. She may have come here illegally but she's been here so long and has built an entire life here that just deporting her without fully hearing her story wouldn't be fair, but then again everyone seems to have a story and how do we decide whos story should be heard and who should automatically suffer the consequences of knowingly breaking our laws.

Rell's Budget Plan

My first response to the front page of the News Times story this morning, "Rell Unveils Budget Plan", was "oh no they are going to take more money from our paychecks!"However, after reading the full story and seeing some other people's perspective I have to say I think the plan is fair and will absolutely benefit children all over the state. Governor Rell plans to increase education funding to all cities and towns over a 3 year period. The money to fund the increase will be taken from an increase in cigarette taxes (which I support 100%) and a state income tax increase. The income tax increase will spread the burden to everyone and in the end we will all benefit from a better educated youth. The article also mentioned the creation of a new Department of Energy, I just hope this new department also takes on the outrageous electricity price increases that have taken place over the last few years, and that help can be provided for the low income families that have to choose between paying the electric bill and putting food on the table.

Mixed opinions are floating around the state of Connecticut this morning as many saw on the news last night or read articles in the papers this morning that Governor Rell has opted to hike up the income tax here in CT. On Wednesday she addressed CT's budget, "offering to raise taxes and exceed the state spending cap for a massive infusion of $3.4 billion to Connecticut schools over five years."

Questions that infused my mind were, "Where is the money going to go?" "Why is it that states who have no income tax have a much better economy opposed to those states who have income taxes?" "Will more and more residents be driven out of the state of Connecticut because of this?" "HOW WILL THIS EFFECT DANBURY?"

This morning I read the 11 page text of Gov. Rell's budget address to the General Assembly (available on NewsTimes.com) and a majority of my questions were answered; taken directly from the speech.

Education

"It will save in terms of prisons we will not have to build, lower teen pregnancy rates, reduced high school drop out rates and more."
"For years we have talked about a 50/50 cost sharing for education between the state and its municipalities - this budget gets it done."
"Every town will benefit. For instance, by year 5 of my program, Bridgeport will be receiving 85 million dollars more a year for education. Danbury will be receiving 28 million dollars more. West Hartford will be getting 22 million dollars more."

"A high school graduation exam will be put into place."
"This investment will result in an additional 14,000 students receiving scholarships and aid."

Health Care

"But at any given point in time, about 220,000 people are without insurance. In December, I proposed the Charter Oak Health Plan and enhancements to the HUSKY program to make sure that every adult and child in Connecticut has access to health insurance."
"Over the past thirty months, nearly 2,800 newborns were identified as having no insurance coverage. That number should be zero."

Reasonable Development

2007 Local Election

Recent rumors have left many wondering which democrat could be the choice to run against Mayor Boughton in the 2007 local election. I don't even think Mayor Mark Boughton has said he would run for sure yet but everyone assumes he will try for atleast one more term. Rumors have for a long time placed Councilman Tom Saadi as the top democratic candidate to run against Boughton in 2007 but recent talk suggests he's decided against it. So who could we expect to step up to the plate? I've heard talks about Councilwoman Lynn Taborsak or former City Clerk Helena Abrantes or even Democratic Town Committee Chair Joe Dasilva running. Whoever it is, it should be interesting.

I think its great that Danbury and local volunteers are trying to figure out who needs assistance in our city and I think its great that the numbers have gone down significantly in the last year, but 138 homeless people in our city alone still sounds like a lot to me. Wasn't the Mayor's Task Force to End Homelessness supposed to help get these people into safe long term homes? Maybe I am rushing it but I think 138 people having to survive outdoors in the cold winter just isn't right.

...Or atleast that seems to be what the Democrats on the Common Council want. I didn't get a chance to comment on this news story yesturday but it seemed so ridiculous that I had to make a point of mentioning it. As I woke up to 98Q yesturday morning I thought I had heard wrong when they were annoucning a top story as, Danbury Democrats look into the real reason First Night Danbury was canceled. My first thought was, hadn't this all been discussed in 2005 when the event almost didn't happen and then again in 2006 when it was canceled? Its been obvious for a long time that First Night Danbury was not attracting the crowds it was ment for, its a shame yes but still reality. So then I was reading the paper and came across the same story. Is it me or is this a huge waste of time by certain common council members? We all know why the event failed, it was a lack of support and volunteers. So why I ask again, are we wasting time on this? Shouldn't CityCenter be the ones responsible to fix this and shouldn't we be focusing on more important issues, and if they think this one is so important then why aren't they putting in the same effort for all the other community events and programs that have been canceled over the years? If you ask me its an attempt to get some extra press coverage but in this case I think it backfired because everyone I know thinks its a waste of time. Danbury Common Council bail out all failed community events...no thanks, we have enough successful ones to focus on.

I've noticed a lot of blogs out there that voice some extremely good, strong opinions however it's sad to see that only a minimal amount of them have something nice to say, non-opinionated.
Soooo.... recently I saw photos on the Tribuna's website of the 8th Annual City of Danbury Mayor's Ball and decided to let you know about them. It looked to be a great evening and if I could have found a babysitter I surely would have attended.
The beneficiaries of the evening were The Danbury Museum and Historical Society, The Healing Hearts Center, and the Volunteer Center.
The Amber Room looked to be jammed on Saturday Night. It is so good to see a community coming together for a particular cause moreover, being with people within their community...some meeting for the very first time and others continuing lifetime friendships.
I hope those of you who went enjoyed yourselves and danced off all you ate!

It's time to wake up ACLU!!

After just posting my latest on the city's new sex offender ordinance I have a few more words to say after reading today's Danbury News Times. In short, " The American Civil Liberties Union thinks the plan by the school system and the city to send parents information about registered sex offenders living in Danbury will do more harm than good."
Hello...How is it that a mailing informing parents that they may be residing in distance to a registered sex offender doing more harm than good? How is it that this information is available via the Internet and the ACLU doesn't have a problem with that? How is it that a community service based class at Danbury High School (Peer Leadership) took the initiative to inform Danbury residents and now they are unfortunately having to deal with this?
Another point in the article stated by the ACLU, "Right now we are opposed to the initiative, but we don't know if we will take out a lawsuit," Redman said Monday. "First of all, it does create complacency among parents, and it will not prevent sex offenders from offending again."
Question ACLU...if a parent recognizes a man/woman hanging around their child's soccer scrimmage and that man/woman is one photographed on the mailing you don't think that parent will say boo? Of course the parent will and of course enforcement will take route on this particular man/woman. Let's wake up a little here!
I truly hope together the Peer Leadership program in especially the two young adults of this program who have work immensely hard, The Board of Education and Mayor Mark Boughton will stay confident in that they are doing the right thing. Dbyblogger supports!

Sex Offender Ordinance Spreads

On December 5, 2006, the city of Danbury passed an ordinance that bans labeled sex offenders from city parks and play areas. States with similar ordinances are those of Texas and Florida. However, Danbury is the first city in the state of Connecticut to pass this enforcement.
Danbury High School students will be spreading the word to 4,000 families of the communities 10,000 students. Students taking part in this effort are enrolled in Peer Leadership, a class offered at Danbury High School in which one has to be recommended. These students must display skills of strong leadership, academics and overall well being. Young people in this program are involved in hours of community service, school wide events, (pre prom Mock Crash) and more. I truly believe these students are keeping the ball rolling for Mayor Boughton's efforts in passing this ordinance. It is very hard to believe that Councilwoman Taborsak was the only member of the Common Council objecting to this ordinance. Taborsak stated in an article from The Courant, "This shouldn't give parents any peace of mind, the only thing that will really keep a child safe is a parent's own vigilance." In another article from the News Times, Taborsak stated, "It's not a go-to-jail-directly card."
Councilwoman Taborsak are you aware that 4,000 people are listed on the state's registry and 40 of them reside here in Danbury? Even though this ordinance doesn't extend into the home, it will open the eyes to the young people who are largely the victims and they in turn can decide if they are treated uncomfortably by strangers or even family/friends. These children will see the signs posted by their play areas in hopes that their parent or guardian will explain to them what the sign means in a simple term. An enforcement banning sex offenders from areas where young children fill is a rational step to protect our youth.
We commend our Mayor for taking such actions along with Danbury Police Chief Alan Baker. If it benefits the life of a child, a mother, a father, or a friend it will also benefit the safety in Danbury's Community.

Ribbon Cutting

From parking garages to a brand new student center, it seems as though Western Connecticut State University has it all. The new student center is located on the Westside Campus, Lake Avenue Extension. The Center will provide a game room, cardio fitness center, meeting rooms, activity space, lounges, and overall a huge welcome mat for students and staff alike to be apart of the great university. Word has it that this is just the start of new renovations at Westconn.
Today's events at 3:30 p.m. will include, Gov. M. Jodi Rell, James. T. Fleming (CT Dept. of Public Works), Lawrence D. McHugh (Board of Directors for CSUS), Dr. David G. Carter (CSUS chancellor) and many local officials.

Snow Finally...

Well, the snow has arrrived throughout the region. I came home from work last night and watched the brief, wet snow squall die down only to wake up this morning to find another dusting. Not enough to delay schools, this snow surprise some weather forecasters say may not happen again anytime in the next 7 days, but the cold weather will persist.
It's all ready noon time and many of the city streets look to be already dry. The city sand trucks were out very early this morning and continued throughout the morning...Well, they had the whole month of December and half of January to prepare for today...And they did a great job!

Mayor Honors Danbury Resident

A press release on the City of Danbury's website stated early this week, "Mayor Boughton Honors Danbury Resident's Lifetime Of Service To The Community." According to the web, Reverend Bush has resided in Danbury since 1943 and has been an original member of the Danbury Fair Rent Commission, leader in the Christian Community and Pastor for Trinity Christian Tabernacle Church here in Danbury.
Those celebrating Reverend Bush's successes will come together today, January 19th at 3p.m. in the Common Council Chambers at City Hall.

Mayor's Live Broadcast

Last night, Danbury's Mayor was a guest on Bob Crnic's, "Common Sense." In an hour long program, Mayor Mark Boughton addressed some of the current issues facing Danbury. Those included, CityLine 311, BRT development on Crosby Street, New Police Station, Location of Elmer's Diner, Ives Concert Park, & Drivers operating a vehicle without a license or proper registration. I would like to designate this post for updating those who didn't catch last night's program.

CityLine 311: Nothing but success was addressed by the Mayor about CityLine 311. The on call representative from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. has informed the Mayor about such calls received on 311...Potholes needing filling....Christmas tree pickups....Street Lights Out...and even a single woman in the Danbury area searching for something to do on New Years Eve. The Mayor would like to have an on call representative for 311 beginning in the spring who will answer calls from 8:30 a.m - 11 p.m. Currently 311 is receiving about 20 calls a day, roughly between 500 - 600 a month. CityLine 311 also gives the Mayor a better understanding as to when the service request was fulfilled and the length of time it took. He stated, "today it may take 8 days to fill a pothole but now with CityLine 311 we can direct the call immediately to the Highway Department and the pothole will be filled in 4 days." He compared Danbury's CityLine 311 to Hartford's, (only other city in CT that has 311) and Danbury's 311 was set up in just 90 days...Hartford took a much longer time. Hartford also spent over $ 3 million on the same call set up as Danbury's was near just $6,000. CityLine 311 aids the police department's non emergency phone calls as 60% of the calls the Police Department receives are not emergency related are now being received through CityLine 311. I myself have called 311 (past entry) to report a street light out. Two things, the representative for 311 who answered my call was indeed knowledgeable and helpful and the Street Light was fixed within a week. Again, TERRIFIC JOB MAYOR AND ALL THOSE WHO HELPED GET 311 UP AND RUNNING!

BRT's newest development project takes place on Crosby Street in Danbury. It is designed to have studio, 1 bedroom and 2 bedroom apartments. This development is available to WCSU students only. The Housing Department at WCSU has stated that there is a waiting list for those who have applied for on campus housing. Mayor Boughton clearly liked the
idea of housing available to WCSU students on Crosby Street, "it isn't to rid the community of a certain group but it is to bring about change to downtown Danbury." According to the mayor the young people will increase business downtown and it is in great walking distance back and forth to the Midtown Campus.

Many residents have displayed much concern regarding the location of Elmer's Diner. Some question as to who approved this spot on a busy road and further as to where there will be designated parking available for diner customers as there is a river in the back of the diner. The Mayor made clear that the new diner was approved back in the 1990's by a past administration. If it was up to him, he said last night that he for one would not put a diner in such a location.

The last issue I would like to comment on was brought up on the show last night by a man who questioned commercial vehicles opposite his property with PA plates on it. The commercial vehicles have apparently been parked there for quite some time and he asked the Mayor as to what steps were being taken to check the status on such vehicles as well as those who drive without a valid license or proper registration. The Mayor instructed the Man to contact a department in City Hall called the UNIT. The UNIT's main goal is to assist Danbury residents to preserve neighborhoods and communities. The UNIT will then get out on the streets and take a look at the vehicle(s) with PA plates (in this case) and according to the Mayor, if they are being garaged here in Danbury overnight or for whatever reason they must be registered within the state of Connecticut. The next point was directed to those who drive without a license and the Mayor said he was working closely with Police Chief, Alan Baker to crackdown on those particular drivers who just aren't breaking a law in Danbury...DRIVING WITHOUT A PROPER LICENSE IS A STATE LAW! I really hope the Mayor and Chief Baker initiate this problem and I strongly agree with the Mayor that they just won't be stopping certain cars driven by certain drivers....they will be stopping everyone...If you or anyone can't answer yes to, "Do you have a proper driver's license and registration and fail to show it to an officer then get off the road!

All in all, last night's broadcast with guest, Mayor Boughton was enjoyable to watch and by doing so I learned about the current issues facing Danbury and the Mayor's thoughts on various topics. I truly feel the Mayor was open and honest to callers and to viewers. He wasn't just saying what we all like to hear...he was saying what he is doing...(20 years to establish a new fire engine department....guess what - he's doing it) as well as (Kaplanis Field, Magnet School, Spray Parks, New Police Department......) I can't say anymore...Mayor Boughton has completed it...I look forward to seeing what the Mayor will accomplish in 2007. Local Restaurant Shuts Down

The Danbury News Times commented briefly on the closing of Bennigans Restaurant here in Danbury. The Restaurant's owners had failed to pay certain tax bills in which they owed to the city.
Currently, the water at Bennigans Restaurant remains shut off.
If I remember correctly, I believe this isn't the first time this has happened to the owners of Bennigans. I remember it closing for a period of time in the past.

In a recent News Times article and a posting on the City of Danbury's website, was a mention of Danbury's Mayor Mark Boughton who will be available to the community on Saturday mornings in City Hall. These meetings will take place on every third Saturday of the month beginning this Saturday, January 20th from 9 a.m. - Noon.
I believe the Mayor is really concerned about the residents of Danbury. He is taking the initiative to listen to both complaints and suggestions. After all, we the Danbury Citizens must guide him....to guide us!

So it seems Listen Up Danbury! has actually been noticed! News Time's Eugene mentioned this blog in a piece he did recently about blogs on his Online Editor blog for the News Times. To be mentioned among The Danbury Dan and The Hat City Blog is pretty cool considering they've done a great job of keeping up with daily news and of bringing their views to the table. Although this blog was "sent the way of the dinosaurs" by Eugene, and I can't say I disagree (this blogging stuff can definetly be time consuming), we plan to continue what was started, hopefully with alittle more enthusiasm. So, don't give up on us yet!

Who says "No one is happy"?

So there hasn't been much going on in Danbury news recently to spark major debate but there was an article is yesterday's Danbury News Times that I thought was worth some further discussion. The article,

Boughton on immigration: 'No one is happy'

got me thinking about whether the issue of illegal immigration did, and will, play a pivotal role in Mayor Mark Boughton's bids for office. My take is simple, its not really a matter of no one being happy but rather the fact that you can't make everyone happy. Everyone has an opinion on illegal immigration so it was an issue in 2005 and it will be again in 2007. If you support illegal immigration then you are for breaking the laws of our nation and no one can provide a legitimate argument for that. If you support illegal immigration reform then you have to recognize that it is a federal issue that involves boarders, economics, deportation, cultural and language barriers and those can only be fixed at a national level. In the end the most anyone can complain about is that Mayor Boughton didn't do enough, but he addressed the issue, which is a lot more then other politicians in his place would have done, he asked for help, and he continues to stand by his choices and to do what he can at a local level. No one is Happy? I say some of us are happy that our Mayor is doing something.

Yesterday was indeed a very busy day for Connecticut's 87th governor, M. Jodi Rell. Our 2nd woman governor gave her inaugural speech in Hartford on Wednesday. Prior to the formal inauguration last night, Rell greeted many as she marched in a parade in downtown Hartford alongside family, friends and numerous supporters.
"This is our time to dream of a Connecticut that is yet to be." Rell's inaugural speech was based on CT's 'education, energy and job creation.'
We here at dbyblogger will bring you the Governor's final comment in her inaugural speech last night and that is, "And I commit myself to creating that Connecticut that is yet to be a Connecticut that must be a place of opportunity where every person has the chance to chart their own course, by the integrity of their own heart." City Line 311 = Very Helpful

I usually find myself these days coming home from work around the 5 o'clock 6ish hour...and at that time especially it being early January...it's dark out! As I get off the exit closest to my home which sits directly on the Danbury/New Fairfield border I've noticed how the street lights closest to the inner city of Danbury are well lit yet heading towards my home I've found myself using my high beams only because the dark roads are extremely hard to navigate. One street light that was out was at the corner of Barnum and East Lake Road...this light truly helps a road moderately traveled, brighten the intersection. A few nights later, driving home, a car in front of me completely missed the turn onto Barnum most noticeably because the light was still out and the intersection very easy to miss.
Just out of curiosity I dialed 311 the next morning. For you who aren't familiar with 311, it is a brand new city line number answered from a department within Danbury City Hall. This CityLine 311 transfers and sends calls to various departments regarding the issue..(i.e. Highway, Housing Authority, Parks & Recs, Neighboorhood Assistance and more.) Danbury's Mayor Mark Boughton proposed the CityLine311 call system and it is to my knowledge only a handful of other cities in the nation benefit from this system. My call, I assume was handled by the Highway Department and the light on Barnum Road was fixed within the following few days. Many years ago following Hurricane Floyd I had some questions about a road destroyed next to my home and both New Fairfield and Danbury's call systems just sent me back and forth between departments and no one was of any help. Again my road sitting directly on the border between Danbury and New Fairfield, I was very glad when Danbury answered to this call.
I heard about CityLine311 via the News Times and I truly hope it is successful to others as it was for me and my situation. Don't Hesitate...Call 311

Dbyblogger Remembers Our 38th President

On December 26, 2006, America said farewell to our 38th president, Gerald R. Ford. At 10:30 this morning a bell will sound 38 times at Washington's National Cathedral remembering Ford as the 38th president. 10:30 a.m. this morning State Offices will pause to remember Ford who led the United States from August 1974 through January 1977. We will also take a moment to reflect upon our 38th president who was the first U.S. President to take office without ever been elected president or vice president.
Gerald R. Ford will then be brought to Grand Rapids, Michigan where he grew up in which the public is free to pay their respects.
A sad farewell yet a time to reflect upon what Vice President Dick Cheney remembered Ford as, " a dear friend and mentor."

Goodbye '06...Welcome '07

In just a few days we will be entering the year 2007...Another year gone, yet a new just around the corner. We will all make resolutions some time or another in the next few days in order to better the person we are, the community we live in or the life of another in the 2007 year. However, by making these new and improved ideas of ourselves, our community or others we have to take into account the person/community we've been this past year...2006. We need to recognize both the challenges and the accomplishments that Danbury and its' residents have seen this past year. With this knowledge, we can all help ourselves, our community, and others move towards a successful 2007 and an even better future. In 2006, we've seen new seats fulfilled in Connecticut's Representative and Senatorial positions in the Midterm Election. In 2007, we will see the results of our city's Mayoral Election. In 2006, many states and cities sought out ideas on illegal immigration. In 2007, new ideas and new plans will continue to flourish in order to provide the life, liberty and pursuit of happiness thats is available to all US Citizens. I wish you and yours a Happy New Year and I will continue posting in 2007.
