U.N.I.T. is Proactive

Many of us saw the destruction of a deadly fire in the Bronx yesterday on local news channels and learned eight children and one adult had died has a result of careless behavior in a multi-family home.

Multi-family homes...sounds familiar because we've heard a lot about them here in Danbury lately.

And that is why the U.N.I.T. (Unified Neighborhood Inspection Team) is taking a proactive approach insuring the problem in the Bronx won't be a problem here in Danbury.

"The Unified Neighborhood Inspection Team will provide outreach programs to educate new residents of Danbury about our community standards and zoning rules and regulations. Our team will focus on blight remediation, code compliance and quality of life issues in Danbury’s neighborhoods and strive to enhance Danbury’s position as a premier place to live, work, and raise a family in a traditional yet progressive community. " Mission Statement of UNIT

So far the U.N.I.T. "has conducted over 680 inspections in this past year; 40% were in violation of city codes relating to illegal apartments and construction without permits."

In today's News Times article featuring the UNIT, Danbury Fire Marshal, Barry Rickert stated, "Considering the size of our community and its demographics, I think we're doing a pretty good job."

The U.N.I.T. can be reached at (203) 796-8026

Is this another paid city department created by the Mayor?

Yes but they are always out on the streets and neighborhoods. Look for the blue "UNIT" jackets and the navy blue SUV they drive around in.

Glad to see these guys trying to work with those who have come into Danbury. It must be a tough job when all you get on a daily basis is complaint after complaint about neighbors, illegal parked cars and what not.

Keep up the good work

Drive down Balmforth Avenue, Osborne St. or Franklin St after dark, and look at those large old homes. Gee, either a lot of folks are leaving the attic lights on, or there are illegals living in those attics. Get them out of there before we have a major disaster on our hands. We need these city employees to help put a stop to this, and they are doing the best they can under what I am sure are difficult circumstances at times.

Very true about the attics housing an abundance of people.
I think the city is working hard to accomodate this situation and they need to keep doing so or else something like the disaster this past week in the Bronx is going to happen here in Danbury.

I reported illegal cars parked in my neighborhood recently and the guys have been checking on it twice (to my knowledge) now.
Especially when the snow plows are doing the streets it's horrible to see all these cars get in their way. I hope a majority of them were ticketed this past snow storm

Will a call to 311 be sent to the UNIT as well - i'm not sure if the UNIT is a department within the city hall building?

Yes the UNIT is in the city hall.

But if you have a problem getting in touch with them I'm sure by dialing 311 you will get aid there as well. Good luck to you!
