Lets Make The World A Better Place?

The DanburyDan beat me to posting on this story but I figured I'd mention it too. The Tribuna, a local bilingual paper, did a front page story on Helena Abrantes candidacy for the 2007 Mayoral election that shed some insight into who she is and why she is running. The Headline was "I Am An Immigrant", well that is great but what does that have to do with being a good candidate for Mayor? I think it is great that the paper pointed out Helena will be the first female, Portuguese born, naturalized citizen to run for Mayor in Danbury, I think more immigrants should be involved with their government, but I just didn't see anything that would convince me she should be the first to be elected. She says in the article that Danbury is not the same, that is true, but in someways I think it has changed for the better and even when it comes to the negatives she failed to mention any specifics. She also said she thinks she'd be an asset because she speaks Spanish and Portuguese, well that is great but I interpret that as, I will cater to the immigrants, including the illegal immigrants. She said that Danbury is a melting pot, and yes it is but I know plenty of people who think it's becoming too much of one. She said that she could help people by explaining to them in their own language what all the laws and regulations mean, isn't the current Mayor already doing that by enforcing the laws, by participating in bilingual community forums and by bringing in leaders of the Spanish & Portuguese/Brazilian community to help when things get lost in interpretation? She said over development is causing a serious risk to the community, and yet she is pictured in the piece with former Mayor Gene Eriquez who allowed so much of the over development that is occurring today. She says that schools and education are the most important items on her agenda, well if you ask me the current Mayor has that pretty well covered with increases every year he's been in office to education funding, with the first major school renovations and construction in years, and a new magnet school that parents can't wait to get their kids into. She says that immigrants shouldn't lose their own culture, and I agree to a certain extent but I also think that is part of the problem with downtown. The immigrant based businesses should be welcoming all residents, not just catering to the Spanish or Portuguese speaking. Overall, Helena sounds like she really cares about Danbury, but she offers no solutions to problems or drastic changes to what she vaguely claims is wrong. I guess we'll wait and see but right now I think experience and a realistic vision are more important then a Lets Make the World A Better Place candidate.

Nice touch on this post. Some think Abrantes will be a breath of fresh air. The immigration issue will be a main focus in this years 2007 mayorial election.
Abrantes is standing high with her ideas that letting Danbury residents know she has faced (possibly all/some) of the obstacles when one becomes a US citizen and it isn't easy.
But come to think of it; aren't we all immigrants?
It might not have been our generation to immigrate to the USA but somewhere along the line our family has.
I read the article in the Tribuna and I really think Abrantes is going to use her ethnic background and experiences against Boughton to seek the Mayors Position. Yet, I don't think claiming that she is an immigrant is going to help her. It will catch the eye of the immigrant on the street but guess what folks 99% of them do NOT vote.

I am sure Abrantes will pick up a ton of votes from our Portugese community.
It will be interesting because Boughton is popular within the whole community.

More shilling from a blogger who's too afraid to come out and just say he's a Boughton supporter.

dishonest.

It's good to see that at least the blogs are doing some commentary on the Dems mayoral candidate. Nothing from the NT. It's unfortunate she has no chance. What ever happened to the strong Danbury Democratic tradition that has thrived here for generations. The current Democratic Town Committee needs to shake things up and get new leadership, what they are putting out is laughable lately.

This blogger doesn't need to say they wave their flags high for Mayor Mark. This blogger is mature enough (not like the HAT CITY) to keep such feelings away from the pages of the blog only because they know other's are entitled to their own.
Why should DBY be railed for commenting on the true facts of the city.
Why should other commentors be railed for expressing their LIKES of this city and maybe even their LIKES of a strong mayor we have in office.
I know why...we love negativity...it's hard to give a compliment these days when the rest of the world carries on with yelling, anger and disrespect.

The town committee did change leadership last summer and I think it led to a very strong local 2006 campaign. Joe DaSilva is now the chair and so far he has been doing a very good job. Just to note the DTC does not officially nominate a candidte until later this year but right now it looks like Abrantes is the only one who wants to step up. I really wish Tom Saadi would run but maybe he is waiting until 2009 since he just got married.

Is this the same Joe Dasilva that owns the Palace theatre?

Anonymous said...

Yes

Anonymous said...

Joe DaSilva Jr DOES NOT OWN the Palace theatre.

good grief...

No the DTC chair, Joe DaSilva is NOT the DaSilva family that owns a majority of buildings on Main Street.

So are they related or not...can I get a ruling?!?!?

No relation

DTC has shaped up over the past year or so. They are more welcoming to new members than the RTC is...Just take a look at their websites.

I thank the last commenter and i visited both sites for the first time. I got to say the republican site was much better and it even had music! The democratic site looked like my 8 year old nephew put it together. I found both to be welcoming, however the dems did ask for candidates on the site, I am not sure that really makes it more welcoming though.

The GOP site is from the CT GOP and the dems is completley from scratch that is why there is such a difference.

The GOP site was made from scratch as well from a local resident who creates websites during his free time so don't go making excuses for the Dem's amature site.

Eileen Coladarcci is the host of the DTC website and Wayne Baker is the host of the RTC website.

Wayne has talent, Eileen does not. Simmilar to The Mayor and the Dems candidate.

The program is the same as the CT GOP site. He may do the text but the program is run by the state republicans.

Nothing on the Danbury GOP site is run by State Republicans and that is an absolute fact.
