Common Council members this evening will discuss the apartment complex BRT is building on Crosby Street here in Danbury. The building contains 115 units and will rent out every single unit to students and students only at WCSU. The large brick building on Crosby Street a.k.a. Brookview Commons has studio, one bedroom and two bedroom apartments that come already furnished (sounds like a great deal.)
BRT will likely keep the tax incentive it received from the city in 2005 to build downtown housing.
The prices are not listed on the Brookview Commons website however it is to our knowledge here at dbyblogger that they range from $4,500.00 to about $7,500.00. The prices range as one individual will pay a smaller amount for a studio than one who chooses a 2 bedroom apartment.
However, what dbyblogger didn't find out about these apartments in the News Times or listed on the Brookview Commons page we would like to share with those out there who may be interested in this complex.
- Students will be able to begin renting from Brookview Commons in the Fall of 2007.
- Students will be able to live in this complex from the fall semester until the end of the spring semester.
- If you choose to live in this complex during the summer time you will have to pay an extra amount.
- BRT isn't sure if they will allow students to live there during the winter recess.
- The set up will be similar to that of a dorm (R-A living on each floor)
- There is no meal plan one will have to buy as there is for the underclassman who dorms on the campus of WCSU.
- There will be a choice as to what parking garage a student chooses to have.
- Regular uncovered garage is $30 a month (x tra, not included in rent)
- Covered garage is $45 a month (x tra, not included in rent)
Dbyblogger compared the costs between living in the Brookview Commons complex on Crosby Street and the apartment housing options on WCSU's west side campus.
- Brookview Commons: One bedroom with three beds ($6,650)
- Westconn's Pinney Hall: One bedroom with two beds ($5,900)
- Westconn's Grasso Hall: One bedroom with two beds ($5,400)

I don't think BRT will be able to keep up with a fine building occupied by college students.
Hopefully Mayor Mark Boughton and BRT are right in that the young people will bring a change to downtown Danbury. We will wait to see
I really don't like this idea. Outside of misleading information that it was supporsed to be for affordable housing, I don't think it is good as the students are not going to be safe walking that far at night. If they have to pick one garage they will have to walk as there is no street parking to hold all the cars. Maybe that university shuttle bus will make stops. But like the guy above says we have to wait and see
I think WestConn should be paying those tax incentives since it is pretty much a Westconn dorm
CROSBY STREET APARTMENTS WERE DESIGNED FOR LOW INCOME FAMILIES AND THEY SHOULD STILL BE PLANNING THIS WAY. IT'S A PROBLEM FOR WESTERN CONNECTICUT STATE UNIVERSITY THAT THEY HAVE A HOUSING SHORTAGE.
This kids should save themselves a few bucks and go live in the dorms on campus. I understand there are over 80 kids on the WCSU waiting list for housing but this Crosby Street building is no where for these students to reside.
To all the anti-students at Crosby commentors, would you move your family to these apartments?
Quite honestly the building is looking nice. I got my hands on a Brookview Commons pamphlet the other day and was impressed that they will all be furnished units.
I would move my family there as it looks like a nice building and if it s for low income they are not going to get much better neighborhoods anyways.
Are the students going to have to re apply after every two semesters or will they allow the students to remain in the same unit?
Students will have to re apply. They will also not be allowed to live in the complex upon graduation.
Abrantes spoke well about the BRT apartments on Crosby Street. I agree with her...Why does BRT get a tax break and no other developing company? It is not fair and doesn't make sense to see no money is going to be profiting from this tax break. Atleast when tax breaks were given during the Eriquez administration they were given to businesses that brought jobs to the city and improved the economy.
BRT is doing a horrible job keeping students safe. The pamplets that BRT made claim that there is a "community room" on the second floor and a "lounge" on every floor. However, to my surprise the community room has become an Resident Director office and the lounges on every floor are a couple of couches thrown in the middle of the hallway. BRT obviously did not plan the building out very well. Furthermore, they originally claimed that there would be parking available; however, they do not have enough parking spots for all of the occupants. Students have to sign a contract and abide by all the rules; however, BRT has not held up their end of the deal. If you ask BRT about the parking problem they tell you to park at Patriot Garage. They claim that they never guaranteed parking spots to all the occupants; however, in the new contract for 2008-2009 they changed the wording to say that they do not guarantee parking spots to everyone, unlike before. Also, BRT changed the rules and fines a month after I signed the contract and they enforce these rules although some of the rules were never in the original contract. If any family thinks that they would move into these apartments they should think again. The floors are uneven, the cabinets are not straight and have already started falling apart, very few of the toilets have actually been put in straight, and the elevators break daily. Also, BRT refuses to talk to students if they have a problem and treat them as subordinates rather than tenants. The supposedly "secure building" is not secure. The doors can easily be broken into (if you ask BRT about this they will deny there being a problem although the contractor was the one who notified me about the problem) and there was only a "security guard" for the first month, after which BRT decided it was too expensive to keep him employed. Not only is it ridiculous that BRT is getting a tax break for the building, much more tax dollars are paying for the numerous police calls and false fire alarms to the building per week. It is obvious that BRT is just money hungry and does not care about "improving the community."
