After just posting my latest on the city's new sex offender ordinance I have a few more words to say after reading today's Danbury News Times. In short, " The American Civil Liberties Union thinks the plan by the school system and the city to send parents information about registered sex offenders living in Danbury will do more harm than good."
Hello...How is it that a mailing informing parents that they may be residing in distance to a registered sex offender doing more harm than good? How is it that this information is available via the Internet and the ACLU doesn't have a problem with that? How is it that a community service based class at Danbury High School (Peer Leadership) took the initiative to inform Danbury residents and now they are unfortunately having to deal with this?
Another point in the article stated by the ACLU, "Right now we are opposed to the initiative, but we don't know if we will take out a lawsuit," Redman said Monday. "First of all, it does create complacency among parents, and it will not prevent sex offenders from offending again."
Question ACLU...if a parent recognizes a man/woman hanging around their child's soccer scrimmage and that man/woman is one photographed on the mailing you don't think that parent will say boo? Of course the parent will and of course enforcement will take route on this particular man/woman. Let's wake up a little here!
I truly hope together the Peer Leadership program in especially the two young adults of this program who have work immensely hard, The Board of Education and Mayor Mark Boughton will stay confident in that they are doing the right thing. Dbyblogger supports!

What a shame that these poor kids who put together this are getting turned down for a good deed. What is this world coming to?
I have no idea what Taborsak, the News Times and the ACLU are thinking. Anything that we do to help our officers, parents and teachers protect our children is a good thing. We can't do nothing because we are afraid we might make a criminal feel uncomforatble. Sex Offenders chose to commit a crime and we as parents, and as a community should choose do what we can to protect out young ones. No matter how big or small doing something is always better then doing nothing.
I'd have to agree with DMom only cuz what would happen if something happened in Danbury like what happened with Elizabeth Smart or the other 2 young boys that just returned home from Missouri I think it was. The ACLU would feel real dumb then.
Get real, people. The real monsters are wearing suits and ties, and driving around in BMW's and Lexus'. You have some deluded idea that sex offenders are like the trolls of fairytales... not so. I moderated sex offender treqtment groups in prisons in Illinois for 10 years, so I am a bit familiar with the field. The AVERAGE offender has 30-40 victims before he/she is caught. This means, that for every registered Sex Offender on your list, there are 39 MORE STILL OFFENDING that just haven't been caught yet. Fathers, brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts, cousins, step-parents, pastors, directors, teachers; all good, solid (appearing) citizens.
Sure, you can identify the 2.5% that have been caught and convicted, who have DONE THERE TIME, and are trying to straighten their lives out. You can harry and harrass them to the ends of the earth, but that only blinds you to the 39 others in your own houses and neighborhoods.
What the heck; break out the pitchforks and torches and let's just have a lynching. Maybe we'll get 19 yr old Johnny, who was sentenced for having sex with 16 yr old Susie. Why not? They are no longer citizens, right? No longer human, right?

Chrisgraves99, you are absolutely right. Your average criminal and sex offender is the guy or girl next door, the guy with a nice car and nice house and even a family member. However, just because we haven't identified the ones that haven't been caught yet doesn't mean we look the other way of those who have. The ones who get caught do deserve a chance to change and better themselves but our children also deserve a chance to not be the victim of a repreat offender. "the real monsters" are the offenders who haven't been caught yet and those who have that might offend again.
